3 Clean Sunscreen’s You Need To Try This Summer

As summer approaches, it's essential to start thinking about sun protection. With so many sunscreens on the market, it can be challenging to know which one to choose. Avobenzone and oxybenzone have been linked to coral bleaching and damage to marine ecosystems. In 2018, Hawaii became the first state to ban the sale of sunscreens containing these ingredients, as they have been found to contribute to the degradation of coral reefs. Researchers found that these chemicals can activate viruses that infect coral, leading to bleaching and death.

Health Concerns
Oxybenzone has also been linked to potential health risks. The chemical has been shown to mimic estrogen in the body, which can alter hormone levels and potentially contribute to reproductive issues. Additionally, some research indicates oxybenzone could cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in some individuals.

Safer Alternatives
Despite the risks, it's still important to wear sunscreen to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Here are a few options to consider:

1. Beautycounter Countersun - This sunscreen is free of avobenzone and oxybenzone, and instead features non-nano zinc oxide as the active ingredient. It's also water-resistant and has a light, non-greasy feel. This SPF is available in a non tinted facial formula, a Creme lotion and a non aerosol spray for the body.

1.5 Beautycounter Dewskin SPF 20 - This avo / oxybenzone free lightly tinted moisturizer offers an incredible light weight, non greasy / chalky formula that can be the base for every makeup / no makeup routine. I love the small tube packaging as it fits in all my belt bags for sporting activities and meets the travel requirements for carry on liquids.

*I wear shade 3

2. Salt and Stone SPF - Salt and Stone uses non-nano zinc oxide and features antioxidant-rich ingredients like green tea and vitamin E to protect and nourish the skin. The formula blends in well without any chalky residue, however the metal ‘squeeze’ tube packaging is a huge nightmare in your beach bag, when your kids attempt to apply it, and when the weather heats up and it oozes out from the lid 😳

3. Ulta Beauty SPF - Ulta's sunscreen is paraben-free and uses non-nano zinc oxide as its primary sunscreen ingredient. It's also lightweight and fast-absorbing for easy application. This is a lovely formula that blends in well without any thickness, stickiness or white residue. I would love to see the packaging change from the bottle / pump as it is impossible to tell when this product is near the end until it just stops.

Switching to a sunscreen without avobenzone or oxybenzone can help protect both your health and the environment. Consider checking out these brands as you make your sunscreen selection this summer.

Have you tried any of these formulas? I’d love to hear your feedback in the comments if you have…
